course intro

Artists have long pushed the technical and cultural possibilities of new technologies. From Paik Nam June inventing a video synthesizer in 1963 to artists involved in today’s open source (hardware & software) and DIY movements. While experimenting with microprocessors, sensors, mini handheld projectors and other technologies we look at this rich history as well as try to decipher our current cultures obsession with gadgetry. We will examine historical precedences (above is an image from John Cages Variations VII preformed at Nine Evenings of Art and Technology) and current practitioners. I consider the class a dialogue both in terms of discussing the field of Art and Technology and in terms of creative production. As such I expect all students to keep a blog and designed the class to involve both collaborative and individual projects.
